This Award exists
to encourage young musicians to keep their tradition alive
and to maximise their musical potential by the pursuit of
a career in traditional music. The winner willbe provided
with high profile performance opportunities and the necessary
tools and advice they require to launch a career in traditional
music.
Closing date for Applications Friday 24th July 2009 Entrants (aged 16 – 27 inclusive) must complete an application form and return it to the address given with a 10-minute recording of their playing, a short biography and paragraph telling us of their commitment to traditional music as a career. (Notes to the recording are also required and where names of songs and/or tunes played and source/background should be detailed.) Recordings can be in CDR (including MP3), mini-disc (short play only), or video. Accompanists entering the award, eg guitarists or percussionists, may have a lead instrument on their recording, eg accordion. Applications must be received no later than Friday 24th July 2009. An adjudication panel will choose 12 semi-finalists. All semi-finalists will be notified during the week beginning Monday 17th August 2009.
Semi-finals Weekend. Friday 2nd – Sunday 4th October 2009
A fun residential weekend at Wiston Lodge, Wiston, South Lanarkshire including workshops and advice on all aspects of working in the traditional music business. Each semi-finalist will perform a 10 minute slot at an evening concert in Coulter Hall, Coulter, South Lanarkshire (accompanists will be provided where required) on Saturday October 3rd (start time 7.30pm), which will be judged by a panel drawn from professional traditional musicians, festival organisers etc. This years semi-finals concert is sponsored by Clydesdale Folk Club. The six finalists selected will be notified by letter (during the week beginning 5th October 2009.
Finals Weekend – Friday 29th - Sunday 31st January 2010 Celtic Connections Festival, Glasgow
The Grand Final will be held at the Celtic Connections Festival, Glasgow on 31st January 2010. Finalists will perform for 15 minutes in a concert setting and can be accompanied by a professional traditional musician of their choice (from a group provided). The winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2010 will be awarded opportunities to play at various high profile festivals in the UK and rest of the world, a CD with Greentrax recordings, perform at the Scots Trad Music Awards, one year's membership of Musicians Union, and all finalists get one year's membership of Traditional Music and Song Association plus the opportunity to take part in the TMSA's annual Young Trad Tour.
