Citty
Finlayson Scots Singer of the Year sponsored by Traditional
Music and Song Association
Joe Aitken
Joe is one of the finest exponents of north-east bothy style
singing. He is a haulage contractor from Kirriemuir, one-time
berry farmer and a favourite singer at festivals throughout
Scotland from Auchtermuchty to Keith and, of course, his own
local Kirriemuir Festival. In January 2004 he was winner of
the Champion of Champions Bothy Ballad competition in Elgin.
Steve Byrne
A traditional singer from Arbroath, Steve sings with Malinky
and the Emily Smith Band. His debut solo album features songs
and poems set to music from his home region of Angus on Scotland's
east coast, including works by Marion Angus and Violet Jacob.
Steve has been immersed in traditional music since early in
childhood, and continues to write and arrange songs in his
native dialect.
Sylvia Barnes
WINNER
Sylvia Barnes was an early member of the Battlefield Band
and the group Kentigern. She is the possessor of one of the
most remarkable voices on the British Folk scene today and
has been described as ‘a singer's singer‘.
Tom Spiers
Aberdeen-born Tom sings and plays fiddle with group Shepheard,
Spears & Watson and was at one time a member of the Gaugers
a folk group which specialised in songs from North East Scotland.
In 2001 Tom was invited to record a solo CD Allan Water -
on The Tradition Bearers label, and thereafter to perform
in clubs, concerts and festivals in the UK and USA.

Dance Band of the Year sponsored by National Association of
Accordion and Fiddle Clubs
Bobby Brown and Scottish Accent
Bobby, a Scot resident in Canada has devoted his life to the
playing, researching, arranging, recording and teaching Scottish
Country Dance music. He maintains one of the few original
manuscript libraries of traditional Scottish music in the
world. The recordings and live appearances of his band have
enabled Scottish Country Dancing to flourish not only in Canada,
but also throughout the world.
John Carmichael Ceilidh
Band
John Carmichael continues to be one of the busiest and most
popular band leaders and entertainers in the country for all
things Scottish. For many years John has compered and played
in theatre shows, performed Burns night speeches and music,
and provided music for ceilidh and country dances all over
the world. John's reputation for being able to 'call' dances
is second to none.
Marian Anderson Scottish
Dance Band WINNER
Marian Anderson's band is well known in both the Scottish
Country and Old Time dance circles. The band did their debut
'Take the Floor' in 1999 and have featured regularly since.
They play at dances up and down the UK as well as abroad.
Skerryvore
Skerryvore are a busy young west coast Ceilidh band based
in Glasgow. They join a long line of terrific musicians from
the tiny island of Tiree, right on the edge of the Atlantic
Ocean, Skerryvore are a band that will have you kicking up
your heels on the dance floor till way after dark.

Folk Band of the Year sponsored by Foot Stompin' Records
Angus Lyon & Ruraidh Campbell
Angus and Ruaridh form a accordion/piano & fiddle duo
which is energetic, passionate and fun. They share a love
and pride for traditional music and their performances encompass
a complete spectrum of melody: from the fastest, birling reels,
to the most tender slow airs. Angus is a six-times 'British
Accordion Champion' and Ruaridh a winner of the prestigious
'Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship'.
Anna Massie Band
WINNER
An excellent trio headed by amazing multi instrumentalist
Anna Massie who was a winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young
Traditional Musician Award in 2003. Anna, with Mairearad Green
(accordion & pipes) and Jenn Butterworth (guitar &
vocals) have originality in both writing and interpretation
and a friendly, engaging and highly musical stage presence.
The band has been invited to play at festivals throughout
the UK and Canada and have recently been touring in Europe.
Dochas
Hailing from all parts of Scotland, this award winning and
dynamic six piece band are heralded as one of the country's
finest exports. Having delighted audiences from Achiltibuie
to Austria, Copenhagen to Calgary and Vienna to Vancouver,
Dòchas are fast becoming one of the most popular bands
on the Festival circuit. Featuring the many talents of Kathleen
Boyle, Julie Fowlis, Carol-Anne Mackay, Eilidh Macleod, Martin
O'Neill and Jenna Reid.
Shepheard, Spiers &
Watson
Peter Shepheard, Tom Spiers & Arthur Watson have been
active performers, collectors and organisers since the 1960s
and are enthusiasts for the Scottish folk tradition. They
bring together a wealth of song in a repertoire gleaned predominantly
from many traditional singers they have known. Simple, powerful
and effective fiddle, whistle and melodeon underscore three
big voices as they revel in a colourful, broad sweep of Scots
song.
Scottish
Pipe Band of the Year sponsored by The National Piping Centre
Inveraray & District Pipe Band
The town’s first pipe band in 70 years – is the
brainchild of piper Stuart Liddell. He hit on the idea of
forming a pipe band while giving weekly bagpipe lessons in
local schools. Stuart received £17,000 from the Scottish
Arts Council and Awards for All, enabling the group to buy
instruments and other equipment.They battled off competition
to shine through as one of the UK’s favourite Lottery
funded projects - scooping the Local Legend trophy at this
year’s National Lottery Awards. The band takes part
in competitions and is regularly asked to play at local community
and charity events Stuart sees the band as a fantastic opportunity
for the youngsters as they're learning discipline and teamwork
and about Scottish history and culture.'
Kintyre Schools Pipe Band
WINNER
Kintyre Schools Pipe Band was formed in October 2000, in response
to a demand from a small group of young musicians to provide
a structure for their collective piping and drumming interests.
Kintyre Schools currently has a Juvenile Grade Pipe Band with
26 playing members, and a Novice Juvenile Pipe Band with 25
playing members. Apart from the 2 Pipe Majors, Ian McKerral
and John Brown all the band members are between 11 and 17
years of age.On 13th August 2005, the Novice band achieved
the ultimate accolade by winning the World Championship on
Glasgow Green, an event attended by some 40,000 spectators
and bandsmen.
Strathclyde Police Pipe
Band
As one of only a handful of professional pipe bands worldwide,
the membership of Strathclyde Police Pipe Band is primarily
made up of operational police officers who are based with
the Pipe Band Unit stationed in the City Centre of Glasgow.
12 times winners of the RSPBA World Pipe Band Championships,
the band comes under the leadership of Pipe Major Donald Mackay
and Drum Sergeant Eric Ward. Both are well known figures in
the pipe band community and together their goal is to ensure
that Strathclyde Police Pipe Band remains as a dominant force
in major pipe band competition.
Tayside Police
The Tayside Police Pipe Band celebrated its centenary in 2005.
With a current pool of over 35 members the band is the largest
the force has ever had. In 2006 the band, which also undertakes
a full itinerary of community-based events, had notable competition
success winning the Scottish Championships in Dumbarton, the
British Championships in Pitlochry and the Cowal Championships
in Dunoon.
