BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2011 announced

Kristan Harvey 22-year-old fiddler was last night crowned BBC Radio Scotland's Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2011 when six of Scotland's finest young musicians battled it out in the grand Final presented by Mary Ann Kennedy live from Glasgow's City Halls on BBC Radio Scotland.

Kristan said last night: " I am absolutely thrilled to have won this fabulous award with such brilliant competition from the other finalists."

Jeff Zycinski, Head of BBC Radio Scotland, said last night: "It was a great night with a truly fantastic line-up of young talented musicians from across Scotland. The excitement around the event never fades and Kristan now becomes the eleventh person to hold the title of BBC Radio Scotland Young Musician of the Year. All the previous winners have gone on to enjoy great success and I'm certain that will also be true for Kristan."

Jeff Zycinski and Andrew Dixon, Chief Exec of Creative Scotland, presented Kristan with her trophy on Sunday, January 30 live on BBC Radio Scotland in front of an enthusiastic audience.

Established to encourage young musicians to keep their traditional music alive, the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year award will provide Kristan with various high-profile performance opportunities.

For every previous BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year - including Anna Massie, James Graham, Stuart Cassells, Shona Mooney, Catriona Watt, Ewan Robertson, Rua Macmillan and Daniel Thorpe - winning the competition has been a major springboard to a professional career in music.

All the finalists get one year's membership of the Traditional Music and Song Association (TMSA); a tour of Scotland organised by the TMSA; and a session on BBC Radio Scotland's Travelling Folk programme, presented by Bruce Macgregor.

The six talented finalists this year were Alistair Ogilvy 24-year-old singer from Strathblane; Andrew Waite 18-year-old accordion player from Duns; Kristan Harvey 22-year-old fiddler from Orkney; Lorne MacDougall 27-year-old piper from Carradale; Mairi Chaimbeul  18-year-old from Skye, (Gaelic song and clarsach); and Tina Rees 23-year-old pianist from Glasgow.
