On
Sunday night Shona Mooney won the BBC Radio Scotland Young
Traditional Musician Award 2006. In what was an impossibly
hard decision for the judges as every musician was fantastic,
Shona performed a balanced and exciting mix of material from
her own borders region of Scotland.
All performers rose to
the occasion in a sellout auditorium. The crowds were literally
spilling out of the doors. Kirsty Cotter (fiddle) had the
job of opening the concert and played a very sensitive and
well thought out set. Next up was Hamish Napier who performed
brilliantly on flute and song. Fraser Shaw ably finished the
first half with excellent piping and also showed great maturity
when he had to stop and fix the tape on his chanter. Christopher
Keatinge and his accordion blew the audience away with his
great technical expertise. Shona played a lovely mix of borders
material and Darren Maclean finished up the finalists with
a lovely mix of song and humour.
While the judges deliberated
Stuart Cassells and band rocked the house in what was a very
popular set.
This Award exists to encourage
young musicians to keep their tradition alive and to maximise
their musical potential by the pursuit of a career in traditional
music. The winner will visit Goderich (Canada) and Tønder
(Denmark) festivals as well as making a CD with Foot Stompin'
Records. They will also receive memberships to the Musicians'
Union and Traditional Music and Song Association.
